2. Introduction and Overview

2.1. Introduction

The ValueCAN 4 Industrial is part of the ValueCAN 4 series, a family of high-quality tools for CAN FD and CAN 2.0. ValueCAN 4 Industrial has a Din Rail case with LEDs indicating the status of the device and its networks. The device pinout is printed on the housing to make wiring easy. ValueCAN 4 Industrial is backed by a one-year warranty. Multiple ValueCAN 4 Industrial devices can be linked together using Ethernet to allow additional CAN, CAN FD or LIN/KLine channels. In addition, DIN rails allow easy installation and organized way to handle compli- cated wiring circuits. The ValueCAN 4 Industrial will fit either 15 or 7.5 mm “high” off the mounting surface.

The ValueCAN 4 Industrial has been tested and verified to support independently galvanic isolated two high-bandwidth CAN FD networks, 1 LIN/KLine. This includes 100% utilization at 8 Mb/s data rates on both CAN FD channels The ValueCAN 4 Industrial can be used with Vehicle Spy software, a powerful vehicle bus analyzer for monitoring messages and configuring baud rates. Vehicle Spy’s other features include filtering traffic, decoding message data, building scripts, simulating nodes, creating GUIs to control, log and view data, and building graphical displays of data. Real-time acceleration and standalone mode enable high speed flashing, gateway, and ECU simulation. ISM runs an embedded code with the support of Coremini standalone mode feature. ISM can be used for encryption and authentication of vehicle network data as part of the cybersecurity. Among other use cases, ISM can support real-time processing of vehicle network data and CCP secure access.

2.2. Package Contents

ValueCAN 4 Industrial packages includes hardware and software.

2.2.1. Hardware

The package contains the following:

  • The ValueCAN 4 Industrial device

  • Category 6 (Cat 6) Standard Gigabit Ethernet Cable

  • USB 2.0 A/B Cable - 2m (6’)

2.2.2. Software

The ValueCAN4 Industrial package includes software obtained electronically from an Email link sent to and downloaded on the Internet:

  • Drivers for the ValueCAN4 Industrial.

  • An API install kit for J2534 and RP1210 containing the neoVI Explorer utility for configuring the device.

  • Optional - A copy of Intrepid Control Systems’ of Vehicle Spy Evaluation software.

If you did not purchase Vehicle Spy, an evaluation version of the program can be downloaded from the website, which allows access to Vehicle Spy’s features.

It is also possible to control the ValueCAN4-2EL or ValueCAN4-4 from within other software using the J2534 and RP1210 APIs that the device supports.

2.3. Operational Overview

The ValueCAN4 Industrial operation can broadly be broken down into three categories: network interfacing, data acquisition, and simulation and scripting.

2.3.1. Vehicle Network Interfacing

Using the provided cables, you can connect the ValueCAN4 Industrial to either a bench test setup to monitor live network activity. All channels are monitored simultaneously and are hardware time-stamped.

2.3.2. Data Acquisition

The ValueCAN4 Industrial enables the acquisition of data from networks with precise control over collection parameters. The data can be captured in Vehicle Spy or using the Intrepid APIs.

2.3.3. Simulation and Scripting

Using Vehicle Spy, you can define transmit messages with custom data and send them manually or on a schedule of your choosing. You can also write intelligent scripts that implement arbitrary logic and compile them into a CoreMini that runs within the device itself. This functionality allows you to create specialized test scenarios, and to simulate ECUs and gateways.

2.6. Hardware and Software Requirements

2.6.1. Hardware:

A PC with a USB 2.0 port or USB 3.x port (Type A or USB-C connector). We recommend using a native USB port to ensure that sufficient power is provided.

Important

“The user must supply a DC power source that incorporates its own surge suppression circuitry.”

2.6.2. Software:

The setup program for Vehicle Spy will install the necessary drivers for the ValueCAN4-2EL or ValueCAN4-4. If you do not have a Vehicle Spy license, you can use the Vehicle Spy trial version for basic network interfacing and driver setup. Drivers can also be set up using the API kit installer. All of this software can be downloaded from the Intrepid Control Systems website at https://intrepidcs.com/support/support-resources/.

Please refer to the Vehicle Spy documentation for its more specific PC hardware and operating system requirements and recommendations. Note, however, that Vehicle Spy will run on most modern Windows-based PCs.

Additional hardware may be required for some uses of the device:

  • Interfacing to a 100BASE-T1 / BroadR-Reach® Automotive Ethernet network requires an Intrepid RAD-Moon or similar media converter device.

  • Additional cables may be needed, depending on the nature of the network to which the ValueCAN4-X is being connected.
