2. Introduction and Overview

2.1. Introduction

Thank you for purchasing an Automotive Ethernet SFP Module from Intrepid Control Systems (ICS). It is a simple and cost effective way to add an Automotive Ethernet port to networking hardware. Intrepid’s SFP products are designed to be MSA compliant and tested for interoperability with other Intrepid hardware. There is nothing in the SFP design that would preclude its use with non-Intrepid hardware, however some SFP hosts have default configurations or limitations that can make interoperability a challenge.

2.1.1. Product Features

Intrepid currently offers several versions of Automotive Ethernet SFPs based on different PHYs and different link speeds. The chart below summarizes the common and unique features of each.

2.2. Operational Overview

The SFP Module is a device which exposes the SGMII interface of a PHY to be used by a host over the SFP interface. The SFP interface also supports I2C communication to an embedded processor that controls the PHY and can access PHY registers over MDIO.

2.3. Package Contents

2.3.1. Hardware

Intrepid SFP modules ship with no additional hardware or accessories. A shielded twisted-pair cable terminated with H-MTD connection systems is available for purchase to connect your SFP module to another device.

2.3.2. Software

Intrepid SFP modules require no software itself. It is configured and controlled through the SFP interface of another Intrepid device or by 3rd party software running on the device hosting the SFP module.

If the software of an Intrepid device intended to host the SFP module cannot be located, please contact Customer Support.

2.4. Hardware Requirements

2.4.1. Device Power

The voltage of the SFP interface is 3.3 VDC.

2.4.2. Computer Interface

There is no direct computer interface to the SFP module; it is hosted through an SFP interface of an Intrepid product or one integrated into a network device such as a switch, router, or PC network interface card. The pin assignment of the SFP interface is given later in this guide, as well as information needed to use the I2C interface to communicate with the module.
